Shopify discount combinations can make two valid offers work together or leave a shopper wondering why a second code was rejected. A discount may target products, the order subtotal or shipping, and each offer has its own combination settings. Before printing “stack with any offer” on a banner, test the exact cart and customer journey that the promotion promises.
Which discounts can combine?
The discount class and both offers' settings decide. Shopify's combination guide separates product, order and shipping discounts. All merchants can combine an order discount with a shipping discount, a product discount with a shipping discount, or product discounts on separate items, when configured appropriately. Product-with-order and order-with-order combinations require eligibility; combining multiple product discounts on the same line item requires Shopify Plus. Check the current eligibility guidance in your admin rather than copying a Plus demo.
An automatic discount does not bypass these rules. A code and an automatic offer still need compatible settings and qualifying products. Shopify also caps active automatic discounts at 25, including app-based offers, and says shoppers can use at most 5 product or order codes and 1 shipping code per order. Limits do not mean every combination up to that number is eligible.
How should you test a promotion before launch?
Build a small matrix with expected totals, then compare checkout. Use one item eligible for the product discount, one item outside its collection and one address with a known shipping rate.
- Write the class, eligibility, dates, usage limits and combination settings for every offer. Review both sides of the intended pairing.
- Test a product discount alone and an order discount alone. Note the subtotal and each line item after the offer.
- Test both together. Shopify applies product discounts before calculating the discounted subtotal for an order discount, so a percentage-of-order offer can use a smaller base than the original cart.
- Add the shipping promotion. Check the actual rate for the destination, not merely a “free shipping” banner on the product page.
- Repeat with a cart that does not meet the product or spend threshold. Record the checkout message and whether a different combination is chosen.
- Test a logged-in eligible customer and a guest if customer segments or first-order restrictions matter. Stop any scheduled test discounts before the public campaign.
For example, if a $100 eligible item receives $20 off, a subsequent 10% order discount may calculate against an $80 discounted subtotal for that item, not the original $100. Other cart items and eligibility can alter the result. Use the actual checkout breakdown as the source of truth.
Why does a shipping code disappear?
Two shipping discounts cannot stack on one rate. Shopify's guide also says a shipping offer may lose to a better non-combinable product/order combination. Inspect the discount settings of both promotions and the cart's post-discount eligibility. A free-shipping minimum advertised as “$100” may be evaluated differently after another discount changes the relevant subtotal; verify the setup and checkout result for your specific offer.
Do not hide the issue with a theme script that merely changes a label. The shipping price at checkout is the charge. If the banner promises universal free delivery while the promotion is restricted by zone, spend or date, update the message and its conditions. Our shipping-bar mismatch guide covers that presentation problem.
Where should the theme help?
Explain qualifying conditions clearly; let Shopify calculate eligibility. A Shoptimity theme can show a promotion tile, cart note or threshold message. It cannot authorize a restricted discount combination. Theme versus app responsibilities are useful when an app creates a multi-class offer. We checked public Shopify rules, not the combination settings in your store. Confirm eligibility and a real checkout before advertising a stack.
