Shopify Knowledge Base Is Now in Your Admin: Check It

Shopify moved the knowledge base for AI shopping agents into the admin on 26 October 2026, so the facts an AI agent states about your store now live in one screen most merchants have never opened. The old standalone app stops working on 15 January 2027.

The short answer: if you store fewer than 1,000 facts, your data moved automatically and updated itself. If you store more, your facts did not move and are gone on 15 January 2027.

What changed on 26 October

According to Shopify's changelog, the Knowledge Base app is replaced by a built-in page at Sales channels, then Agentic, then Knowledge base. The standalone app stops being available on 15 January 2027.

The new page drafts facts about your store from a scan of your own storefront, and you approve or reject them. It also categorises everything into ten areas including returns and warranty, payment options, delivery and fulfilment, and second-hand purchases.

Some facts publish themselves. Store policies and contact information go live as soon as Shopify creates them. Everything else from the storefront scan stays unpublished until you approve it.

The migration gap nobody should hit by surprise

For stores with fewer than 1,000 facts, everything you wrote in the old app transferred automatically and published, with no action needed.

For stores with more than 1,000 facts, the facts did not transfer. Those merchants have to re-enter what they want to keep before 15 January 2027. Shopify says it emailed the affected accounts directly.

That is a large-store problem, but it arrives silently. If you run a Shopify Plus catalogue with a rich FAQ library, check whether you were one of them before the January date becomes urgent.

Why an agent's answer matters more than your FAQ page

A shopper asking an AI assistant about your returns policy is not reading your page. They are getting a sentence, and that sentence is either right or it is not.

Bill Hunt tested 122 Shopify stores for Search Engine Journal in August and September 2026. Of the 88 stores whose policy tool he queried, only two returned a usable answer about cancelling an order.

Two out of 88. When we tested storefronts for agent readiness we found the same shape of failure, and the cause is rarely a missing policy page. It is a category the knowledge base has no slot for, so the agent guesses or declines.

The 20-minute check

  1. Open Sales channels, then Agentic, then Knowledge base, and read what is currently published.
  2. Query your own store through an AI assistant using a real buyer question, such as "can I cancel my order after it ships". Not a policy question, an awkward one.
  3. For anything the agent got wrong, add it under Additional Facts.
  4. If a storefront change was missed, request a rescan. Shopify warns this can take up to 48 hours, so do not leave it to the day before a launch.
  5. If you use a custom storefront or the Agentic plan, note you can only add additional facts rather than generate them.

Two limits worth knowing before you invest time

Known that published facts are visible beyond your own store. According to Shopify, each store's published knowledge base is publicly available through the Storefront MCP, which AI apps and third-party platforms can read. Treat everything you publish as public copy.

The second is that the knowledge base does not change how often you appear in AI results. Shopify's own help documentation for the older app version says it improves the accuracy of AI responses about your store, not your visibility. If you were hoping this was an AI SEO lever, it is not one.

There is also a documentation wrinkle. Shopify has marked the Storefront MCP tool used for policies and FAQs as deprecated while leaving it functional, and points developers to a newer Ask MCP with an ask_business tool that Shopify itself describes as a draft capability. Expect this surface to keep moving.

How this connects to the rest of your storefront

We wrote last week that agentic commerce went default in October and that the product page is where the handoff is won or lost. The knowledge base is the second half of that argument: the product page answers the buying question, and this page answers everything around it.

Neither of them fixes a storefront that cannot state price, availability and delivery in the first screen. That remains the higher-return work, and it is what we actually sell, so weigh our enthusiasm accordingly.

Do I need to do anything if I never used the Knowledge Base app?
Check the page anyway. Store policies and contact details may already be published for agents without you opening the app.
Which merchants lost facts in the migration?
Those with more than 1,000 facts in the old app. Smaller stores transferred automatically.
When does the old Knowledge Base app stop working?
15 January 2027. Facts not re-entered by then are lost for affected large stores.
Does the knowledge base improve my AI search visibility?
No. Per Shopify's own documentation, it improves how accurately agents answer questions about your store, not how often your store appears in AI results.
Who can read my published knowledge base?
Any AI app or third-party platform reading your Storefront MCP. Publish as if the content is public, because it is.
The verdict
Open the page today and ask your own store an awkward question through an AI assistant. If the answer is wrong or absent, you have found a fixable gap in twenty minutes, and the fix is one paragraph under Additional Facts rather than a development ticket.
