Shopify Subscription Products: Test the First and Next Order

Shopify Subscription Products: Test the First and Next Order

Shopify subscription products are not ordinary products with a “subscribe” badge. A selling plan, subscription app and compatible recurring payment flow must work together. Merchants should check the first checkout and renewal price, inventory, shipping and the customer's ability to manage the contract.

What creates a subscription purchase option?

A subscription app manages the recurring offer. Shopify's subscriptions overview describes the first-party Shopify Subscriptions app and third-party alternatives. The setup instructions let you choose subscription-only or subscription and one-time purchase for a product. A theme may display the purchase selector, but it cannot bill the next cycle by itself.

The first-party Shopify Subscriptions app supports multiple plans with frequencies and discounts, customer management and notifications. Check its restrictions before designing a bundle or sales channel offer. Shopify says subscriptions cannot be used with draft orders, and the first-party app does not support bundles.

What should you test before launch?

Treat the renewal as a second, separate order flow. Create a low-risk test product and record both the immediate and scheduled results.

  1. Choose a plan frequency and billing terms. State whether a shopper can choose a one-time purchase and exactly what the recurring price will be.
  2. Check the payment gateway and customer payment method. Shopify's subscription considerations lists supported gateways and warns that some local or manual methods may not support recurring billing.
  3. Inspect the selector on mobile and in cart. Changing variants or quantities should not silently change the selected purchase option.
  4. Complete an initial permitted test transaction and read Shopify's checkout renewal disclosure. Shopify says the disclosure cannot be removed.
  5. Review how the next billing attempt and fulfillment will work. Check inventory before a renewal, not only at initial checkout.
  6. Sign in as the customer and find skip, pause, cancellation, payment-method and address controls supported by the app. Test notification links.

Shopify's recurring-shipping guidance notes that a selected shipping method applies to the initial delivery, while later shipments may revert to the subscription's default method. That distinction is easy to miss if a promotion promises the first order's shipping choice forever.

What breaks the recurring offer?

A compatible-looking product card is not enough. Unsupported payment methods, insufficient inventory on renewal, a subscription-only item placed in an unsupported channel or an app block missing from the theme can interrupt the journey. Shopify's first-party app considerations also identify supported channels and incompatibilities. Do not assume an ordinary checkout test verifies a future billing attempt.

Keep cancellation language visible and consistent with the policy. Review tax and local recurring-payment obligations with qualified advisers. The goal is a customer who knows the interval, price and how to stop, rather than a selector that obscures the commitment.

What should the theme do?

Present the plan choice and terms clearly. Shoptimity's themes are a storefront presentation layer; test app-block compatibility in your installed theme rather than assuming a demo confirms it. Theme versus app responsibilities explains why the recurring billing logic lives in an app and Shopify checkout. We checked the published platform rules, not your app configuration or payment gateway.

Can a merchant offer both one-time and subscription purchases?
Yes. Shopify's product purchase-option setting can offer both, or make the product subscription-only where supported.
Does a “subscribe” button create recurring billing?
No. You need a subscription app, plan, eligible gateway and supported payment method. Test the resulting contract.
Can subscriptions be placed with draft orders?
Shopify lists draft orders as incompatible with subscriptions. Use a supported checkout flow instead.
Will shipping stay the same for every renewal?
Not necessarily. Shopify documents differences between the initial selected method and recurring shipment defaults. Check the app and shipping profiles.
