Shopify Fraud Apps vs Native Fraud Analysis

Shopify fraud apps and native fraud analysis serve related but different roles. Shopify's tools surface risk indicators, while third-party services may add automated decisions, specialist review or a contractual guarantee. A guarantee is valuable only when its covered losses and operational benefits justify its cost.

Start with what your store can use

Shopify's fraud prevention guide says fraud analysis is available to stores using Shopify Payments and to eligible stores on Grow, Advanced or Plus using most third-party processors. Availability and indicators vary; it is not safe to assume every order on every plan receives identical analysis.

For eligible US stores using Shop Pay, Shopify Protect can cover qualifying fraudulent and unrecognized chargebacks. Shopify's status guidance specifies fulfilment and carrier handoff requirements. Coverage is not a blanket guarantee for every order or dispute reason.

Work out the real economics

Calculate monthly avoidable loss as covered fraud losses, dispute charges and review labour, less any amounts recovered. Separately estimate contribution margin lost through false declines. Compare that with the proposed vendor's subscription, transaction charges and implementation time.

Illustration only: if eligible losses and labour total $800 per month, a $600 monthly guarantee might save $200 before considering changes in approvals or uncovered claims. If the contract covers only half those losses, savings fall to $400 against a $600 fee. These are examples, not vendor performance predictions.

No single dispute-rate threshold is a reliable universal buy signal. Order value, product cost, fraud type, geography, approval rate and guarantee exclusions change the answer.

Protect good customers as well as revenue

A high-risk flag is a signal, not proof of fraud. Document a review procedure: check available evidence, contact the customer through an appropriate channel, avoid requesting sensitive card data, and record the outcome. Watch for disproportionate false declines affecting gift orders or legitimate international shoppers.

Ask vendors for an evaluation on the same historical order sample. Compare approval rates, legitimate orders rejected, fraud losses, review workload, dispute reasons and the share actually covered. Historical tests and vendor claims still cannot guarantee future results.

Read the guarantee

Get written answers about eligible payment methods, countries, fulfilment deadlines, excluded reason codes, evidence requirements, coverage caps and claim deadlines. A fraud guarantee may exclude non-fraud disputes; some contracts offer broader protection. Check whether fees apply to all orders or only approved orders, and whether there is a minimum.

Fraud prevention does not replace chargeback monitoring. Shopify's dispute guidance notes that winning a dispute does not remove it from the chargeback rate. For cash-flow implications, read payout holds and reserves.

Establish a review baseline

Record the number of flagged orders, time spent reviewing, eventual dispute outcomes and legitimate orders released or cancelled. Use consistent date windows and separate fraud from delivery or product disputes. Small samples can be volatile, so avoid treating one unusually quiet or busy month as a stable forecast. Revisit rules regularly as products, destinations and payment methods change.

Does every Shopify store get the same fraud analysis?
No. Availability depends on the payment provider and plan. Check Shopify's current fraud prevention documentation.
Does Shopify Protect cover every chargeback?
No. It covers eligible fraudulent and unrecognized chargebacks on qualifying orders when the relevant terms and fulfilment requirements are met.
What should I compare before buying a guarantee?
Compare the fee, covered reason codes, eligibility, limits, claims process, approval rates and the cost of false declines.
Is a high-risk score proof of fraud?
No. It is an indicator for review. Use evidence and a consistent decision process rather than assuming every flagged buyer is fraudulent.
