Shopify Gift Cards: Set Them Up Without Checkout Surprises

Shopify Gift Cards: Set Them Up Without Checkout Surprises

Shopify gift cards are a payment instrument, not just a product with “gift card” in its name. A merchant can sell a gift-card product or create a card directly in the admin for a customer. Those paths have different accounting implications, and checkout: not your theme: decides whether the code can be redeemed. Test the entire purchase-to-redemption journey before promoting cards for a holiday or launch.

What is the difference between selling and creating a gift card?

A sold gift-card product is prepaid; an admin-created card is issued without receiving payment. Shopify's gift-card overview says a purchased card is generated when the order containing the gift-card product is fulfilled. A card created from the admin can be used as a reward or service recovery credit without a sale at issuance.

This is not a cosmetic distinction. A regular product called “$50 Gift Card” does not become a redeemable Shopify card after fulfillment. Shopify explicitly warns about this in its overview. Build a proper gift-card product, choose denominations and run a complete purchase test. If you need to compensate a customer, use the admin's card creation workflow rather than pretending an ordinary product is stored value.

How do you set up Shopify gift cards for sale?

Treat setup as a five-stage launch, not a single product-page toggle.

  1. Create a gift-card product in Shopify Admin. Add clear denomination options and a product description explaining delivery and redemption. Shopify caps gift-card product denominations at the equivalent of $10,000 USD; this is a platform limit, not a suggested sales amount.
  2. Choose a currency strategy. Store-currency cards can be redeemed in any currency through conversion. Local-currency cards have different catalog publishing and redemption rules; check every market you sell to.
  3. Check the customer-facing page. Make the value, delivery method, recipient instructions and any applicable terms legible on mobile. A theme can present this information but cannot change the card's generated redemption code or stored value.
  4. Buy one low-value test card. Complete a real test transaction using your approved payment-testing process, fulfill its order, and check that the recipient receives the notification containing the code. Do not share an active code in screenshots.
  5. Redeem part of its balance. Test a smaller basket, a basket larger than the balance, and the resulting remaining balance. Confirm the customer sees the correct amount at checkout and can choose another payment method when required.

Shopify's redemption guidance says card balances can be spent across multiple orders, multiple cards can be used on one order, and a card can be used together with a discount code. A card cannot buy another gift card. These checkout behaviors matter more than a decorative “gift-ready” badge.

Why does a gift card fail in another market?

Currency and catalog settings are common causes. Shopify says a store-currency card can be converted at checkout, while a local-currency card is generally redeemable only when checkout uses that same currency unless cross-currency redemption is enabled. Local-currency gift-card products are not published to catalogs by default, so a missing product in one market might be a catalog issue rather than a theme bug.

Shopify's gift-card product guide describes the cross-currency option and its exchange-rate risk. Decide before selling cards across markets; do not write “usable worldwide in any currency” in promotional copy without checking the actual configuration. Laws about expiration and restrictions vary by location too, so have the policy reviewed for your sales markets.

Can a theme customize the code or face value?

No: a storefront theme controls presentation, not the underlying payment instrument. Shopify states that a theme cannot customize the value or redemption code of a gift card. It can help shoppers discover the product, understand denominations and find the policy. It can also help display a gift-card landing page alongside complementary items, but the checkout balance belongs to Shopify.

A gift card created directly in the admin has a standard maximum equivalent of $2,000 USD, according to Shopify's card-creation guide; higher values require contacting Shopify Support for review. The separately documented sold-product limit is higher. Do not mix the two limits in staff instructions, and do not promise a customer that an arbitrary high-value custom card can be issued instantly.

We checked Shopify's published documentation, not Shoptimity's private theme code or your gift-card settings. Shoptimity's theme catalog is relevant to presentation; the theme-versus-app article explains why payment-state features are different from page widgets. The hidden cost of extra apps is also worth reading before adding a second gift-card layer you might not need.

Is a normal Shopify product named “gift card” redeemable at checkout?
No. Create a genuine gift-card product. Shopify generates the redeemable gift card when the gift-card-product order is fulfilled. A normal product with that name will not automatically generate a card or code.
Can shoppers use a gift card more than once?
Yes, if a balance remains. Shopify says a card can contribute to multiple orders; if it covers only part of an order, the shopper can choose another eligible payment method for the rest.
Why is my local-currency gift card missing from one market?
Check publication to that market's catalog, the card's currency and whether cross-currency redemption was enabled. Shopify does not publish local-currency gift-card products to catalogs by default.
Can customers purchase a new gift card with a gift card?
Shopify says a gift card cannot be used to buy another gift card. Test the exact checkout path before advertising gift-card stacking or cross-market offers.
