Shopify POS Lite vs POS Pro: What the $89 a Month Buys

Shopify POS Lite is free on every paid plan and POS Pro adds $89 a month per location. For most single-store merchants Lite covers the counter; Pro earns its fee when you need staff roles, stock transfers between locations, exchanges at any location, or pickup in store.
The decision is not really about the $89. It is about which of those four features you cannot run the shop without, and whether your card rate and location count turn the add-on into a four-figure annual line.
What each tier actually includes
According to Shopify's plan documentation, POS Lite ships with Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus at no extra charge. It takes payments, sells products, processes returns at the original location, and keeps one inventory in sync with your online store. That is a working register on an iPad or a phone.
POS Pro adds the operating layer a staffed store needs:
- Staff and permissions. Unlimited POS-only staff accounts with custom roles, so a cashier cannot issue a refund above a set value.
- Inventory movement. Stock transfers between locations, receiving against purchase orders, counts, low-stock alerts and demand forecasting.
- Omnichannel. Buy online pick up in store, local delivery, ship from store, saved and emailed carts.
- Retail reporting. Daily sales summaries, staff performance, sell-through.
- Receipts and support. Custom printed receipts and a two-year hardware warranty instead of one.
The per-location billing trap
Pro is billed per location, not per register. Ten iPads in one shop cost $89; a second shop costs another $89. Two locations with Pro on Basic land at $39 plan plus $178 add-on, which is $217 a month before hardware or processing. Five locations reach $484.
Plus behaves differently: the first 20 POS Pro locations are included, and the fee above 20 is waived when Shopify Payments is in use. A merchant running four shops on Plus pays nothing extra for Pro.
We ran the per-location arithmetic at one, two and five shops, and the five-shop case is where Lite stops being a compromise. One more detail that catches people: annual billing blocks downgrades until the cycle ends. If you add Pro for a seasonal pop-up on a yearly term, you keep paying after the pop-up closes.
Card rates decide more than the add-on
In-person processing runs about 2.6% plus 10¢ on Basic, 2.5% on Grow and 2.4% on Advanced through Shopify Payments. On a single location at $15,000 a month in person, the difference between the Basic and Advanced in-person rate is roughly $30 a month, or $360 a year. That does not close the gap to Advanced's own subscription, but it does mean the plan decision and the POS decision share the same arithmetic.

The hardware line nobody quotes
Software is the small number. A retail kit with a stand, reader and drawer starts around $219, and a full counter with a tablet, barcode scanner, receipt printer and cash drawer runs into four figures per location. Budget the hardware once and the software monthly, and the $89 stops looking like the expensive part of the decision. If you are still choosing a plan underneath it all, our guide to which Shopify plan you actually need covers the plan-side arithmetic.
When Lite is the correct answer
Our verdict: stay on Lite unless one of these is true. You cannot control refunds by role. You need to move stock between shops. You want exchanges processed anywhere. You want pickup in store. Without one of those, Pro is a $1,068 a year upgrade for reports you can rebuild in a spreadsheet.
The limitation worth stating plainly: Lite is genuinely thin on staff control. Once you have three or more people on a register, the absence of roles becomes a cash-handling risk rather than an inconvenience, and no report fixes that.
