Shopify Product Image Alt Text: Write It for People

Shopify Product Image Alt Text: Write It for People

Shopify product image alt text should help a shopper understand an image when they cannot see it. “best dress cheap sale dress” is not a useful description, and leaving a color variant unnamed can make selection harder. Write short, specific descriptions for meaningful product media, then inspect the separate images managed in your theme editor.

Where do you add product image alt text?

Product media alt text is edited on the product, not in the theme's global settings. Shopify's product-media instructions say to open a product media item, select Add alt text, enter a description and save it. Shopify allows up to 512 characters but recommends approximately 125 or fewer. That is an upper limit and recommendation, not a target to fill with keywords.

Other storefront images can live in theme sections. Shopify's theme-image accessibility guide describes adding alt text through the editor for section images. A product photo and a homepage hero may therefore need to be audited in two different places.

What makes alt text useful?

Describe the information the picture contributes. Use a concrete noun, relevant distinguishing detail and context only when helpful. For example, “Terracotta linen armchair with curved arms, front view” communicates more than “chair image 2.” A close-up might be “Terracotta linen weave and stitched armrest detail.” Do not put a product's entire description in every gallery image.

A five-image audit can reveal a pattern before you edit the whole catalog:

  1. Pick a product with a front view, alternate color, close-up, lifestyle photo and size diagram.
  2. Write a different purpose-driven description for each meaningful image. State what changes between color or angle views.
  3. Check variant assignment so alt text and the selected color do not contradict the photo.
  4. Review decorative graphics in theme sections. An image that conveys no new information may not need a spoken description, depending on how the theme implements it.
  5. Test with image loading disabled or a screen reader. Check whether the gallery order and controls still make sense.

According to Shopify's accessibility overview, screen-reader users rely on alternative text to understand storefront images. Alt text is not a replacement for visible text when a promotion or size warning matters to everyone. Avoid baking critical offer terms into a hero image without text elsewhere on the page.

Does alt text help search too?

It can give search engines context, but accessibility comes first. Shopify's SEO guidance also mentions descriptive alt text for search. That is not permission to repeat the same primary keyword across 20 gallery photos. Describe each image honestly. If two views look similar, identify the angle or detail that makes the second useful.

For a catalog with many similar products, make an editorial rule: include visible color, material and view when those are relevant, but never assert a specification the image does not establish. Shopify's media editor may suggest AI-generated alt text. Review it before accepting; a plausible wrong color is worse than a shorter accurate description.

What can a theme improve?

The theme should expose product media and controls accessibly, but merchants own the descriptions. Shoptimity's theme catalog can be evaluated for keyboard-friendly galleries and readable captions. Our variant-image troubleshooting guide covers mismatched color selections, while theme versus app separates media presentation from catalog data. We checked Shopify's public guidance, not your site's accessibility audit. Test a real product and device before declaring the work complete.

Is 512 characters the recommended length?
No. Shopify lists 512 as a maximum and recommends brief descriptions of about 125 characters or fewer. Use only the words needed to communicate the image's purpose.
Do all gallery images need identical alt text?
No. Describe what each meaningful view contributes, such as a color, angle or material detail. Repeated keyword-heavy text is less helpful to shoppers.
Where is alt text for a homepage hero?
Usually in the relevant theme-editor image setting rather than the product-media editor. Shopify provides separate instructions for theme images and product media.
Can I accept Shopify's suggested alt text without checking it?
Review the suggestion first. Automated text can misidentify a product feature or color. Accuracy matters more than filling every field quickly.
