Shopify Shipping vs Shippo and ShipStation: Where the Free Tool Stops

Shopify Shipping vs Shippo vs ShipStation cover comparing label discounts

Shopify Shipping is free with every plan and publishes discounts of up to 88% off USPS, 82% off UPS and 80% off FedEx. A paid platform such as Shippo or ShipStation rarely beats those headline rates, what it sells is multi-carrier comparison, multi-channel order flow, and commercial-rate access on plans where Shopify's own discount is thin.

That last point is the one merchants miss. The label discount on Shopify Shipping reportedly deepens with your plan, so the same box can cost more on Basic than on Advanced.

The main limitation is not price. Shopify Shipping cannot rate-shop a parcel across carriers, and it does not consolidate orders from other channels, so the monthly fee a paid platform charges buys workflow rather than a cheaper label.

What Shopify Shipping actually is

It runs inside the admin with no app, no subscription and no setup. You buy a label, tracking syncs to the order, and the rate is deducted from your Shopify balance or charged to your card. Supported carriers in the US are USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL eCommerce plus DHL Express; Canada Post in Canada; Sendle in Australia.

Three limitations sit underneath that convenience, and all three are structural:

  • No rate shopping per parcel. You pick a carrier and service, then see the price. A tool that compares all carriers for the same box will frequently find a cheaper option.
  • No multi-channel queue. Orders from Amazon, eBay or Etsy do not appear. If you sell on three channels you are printing labels in three places.
  • Thin automation. No rules that pick a service by weight, destination or product tag, and no batch workflow for 200 orders.
  • Limited access to your own negotiated rates. Bring-your-own carrier accounts is not the native default.

Where the discount gap shows up

According to a 2026 rate audit, discounts by Shopify plan land at roughly 0-25% off USPS retail on Basic, about 77% on Grow and 88% on Advanced. Treat the exact percentages as directional, since they depend on service and zone, but the direction is the point: a Basic-plan store is paying close to retail on the same label that an Advanced store buys at a steep discount.

ShipStation's $14.99 tier excludes API access and bring-your-own carrier accounts, which is why $29.99 is the honest entry price. Shippo includes API access on every plan, which matters if you need live rates at checkout.

The arithmetic at three volumes

We benchmarked label spend at three volumes, using a $6 average label and the realistic $1.20 to $1.80 per-label saving a commercial rate delivers.

At 50 labels a month, assume a $6 average label. A 30% rate improvement saves $90; Shippo's free tier covers 50 labels, so the saving is real and the cost is zero.

At 300 labels a month, a $1.20 saving per label is $360. Shippo's paid tier and ShipStation's Standard both sit under that, so the tool pays for itself.

At 1,500 labels a month, $1.80 per label is $2,700, and the argument shifts from rate to labour. Batch printing and automation rules save hours a week, and ShipStation's $29.99 stops being the interesting number.

What the free tools genuinely lack

Our verdict: start on Shopify Shipping, and move at the point where either the discount gap or the manual work exceeds the subscription. That crossover lands around 50 orders a month for rate shopping and 500 for automation.

Three limitations worth naming. First, a third-party platform adds a system between you and the order, so tracking sync failures become a support issue you did not have. Second, the discount ceiling is advertised rather than guaranteed, so measure your own five most common parcels before switching. Third, switching mid-quarter means reconciling labels bought in two systems against one set of shipments, and a double-bought label is money gone.

If your shipping problem is really a checkout problem, free shipping thresholds that do not match checkout covers the customer-facing side, and the hidden cost of Shopify apps is the right frame before adding another subscription. Shopify's own tooling is described at shopify.com.

Is Shopify Shipping really free?
Yes. There is no subscription and no per-label software fee; you pay postage at Shopify's discounted rate. Carriers and discount depth vary by plan and country.
Is Shippo or ShipStation cheaper than Shopify Shipping?
Per label, often yes, because both offer commercial carrier rates regardless of your Shopify plan. Including the subscription, the saving only appears above roughly 50 to 500 labels a month depending on which platform you pick.
Can I use my own negotiated carrier rates?
Usually only on a paid tier. ShipStation requires its Standard plan at $29.99 rather than the $14.99 Starter, and some platforms price bring-your-own accounts as a separate add-on.
Does Shopify Shipping work for Amazon or eBay orders?
No. It handles Shopify orders only. Multi-channel selling is the clearest reason to move to ShipStation, which consolidates channels into one queue.
