Shopify store policies are customer-facing commitments, not a box to tick once during setup. A shipping policy that promises delivery everywhere conflicts with limited shipping zones; a return policy can contradict the actual request workflow. Review the text alongside live checkout and support operations before putting links in the footer.
Which policies can Shopify manage?
Shopify supports several policy types in Admin. The policy setup guide lists return and refund, privacy, terms of service, shipping, legal notice, contact information and subscription policies. Some policies can use automation linked to store settings; others can be written manually. An automatically generated text still needs a merchant review. Shopify explicitly says its templates are informational, not legal advice or a compliance guarantee.
After adding policies, Shopify links them in the checkout footer. A merchant can also add them to storefront menus or footer navigation so shoppers can read terms before checkout. The theme controls that navigation; Shopify's policy settings hold the underlying policy content.
What should a policy audit cover?
Compare each promise with the system and staff workflow that must fulfill it. Use one real product and one target market as a test case.
- Open Settings > Policies and review every published policy. Check whether automation is enabled and where its variables get information.
- Compare return windows, exclusions and contact steps with your actual returns process and any returns app.
- Compare the shipping policy with checkout destinations, rates, fulfillment time and local pickup or delivery promises.
- Check business name, address, email and phone number. Use appropriate public contact details and confirm any legally required disclosures with counsel.
- Open product, cart and checkout pages as a guest. Ensure links work and no promotion contradicts the policies.
- If the storefront serves several languages, review the translated policies for the same substantive commitments. Record who owns updates.
The Shopify policy guide explains that automated content can draw from settings such as shipping destinations or return rules. Updating a setting may update its policy, but you should inspect the customer-facing text afterward. A generated policy is not a replacement for a legal review in your markets.
Why do product-page and policy promises disagree?
Theme sections, apps and policy settings may be maintained by different people. A product page might advertise “free shipping on all orders” while the policy describes paid rates and checkout charges for a remote zone. Fix the promise, not just the placement of the link. Our shipping-bar mismatch guide addresses display-versus-checkout differences.
The same applies to returns: a “30-day returns” badge should be checked against the actual policy, product exceptions and support workflow. Shopify notes that generated return text should be reviewed against any returns app. Our self-serve returns guide expands on the operational side; publish that earlier draft before relying on its public link.
What can Shoptimity control?
A Shoptimity theme can surface policy links and readable summaries, but cannot make inaccurate terms true. Keep full text in Shopify policies, link clearly from appropriate pages and avoid hiding material conditions in tiny type. Theme versus app responsibilities helps assign ownership. We checked Shopify's public documentation, not your legal obligations. Have qualified counsel review policies for your jurisdictions and products.
