Shopify URL redirects help a customer and search engine reach the right destination after a product, page or collection URL changes. They are not a universal switch that overrides a page that still exists. Plan the destination before deleting content, then test the old address directly. A working redirect should make the journey clearer, not send every discontinued item to an unrelated homepage.
When will a Shopify redirect work?
The old path must be broken. Shopify's URL-redirect guide says redirects only work from URLs returning an error such as a 404. If a product remains accessible at its old URL, adding a redirect will not override the live page. Products hidden from all sales channels or set to draft can become ineligible for public viewing, but check the actual URL response before assuming it is broken.
Shopify also reserves some paths. You cannot redirect arbitrary checkout, cart, account or platform routes; the guide lists restricted prefixes including /cart, /orders and /apps. Treat redirects as a content-migration tool, not a way to rewrite core Shopify routes.
How should you map old links?
Create a one-to-one destination list whenever possible. A discontinued color might go to the parent product or closest replacement; a retired collection might go to a current category with similar intent.
- Export or list the URLs that are changing, including links from ads, menus, blog posts and high-traffic search pages.
- Choose a relevant new destination for each. Avoid a blanket homepage redirect that frustrates visitors looking for a particular item.
- Check whether the old URL still loads. If it does, determine how to retire or change it safely before expecting a redirect.
- In Content > Menus > View URL Redirects, create the old and new path mapping. Use a relative destination path for another page on the primary domain.
- Open the old address in a fresh browser session and confirm it reaches the intended destination. Test a second market subfolder if you use international storefront URLs.
- Update your own navigation and internal links to point directly to the final URL; a redirect should not become the permanent path used in your menus.
Shopify's guide documents redirect imports for bulk migrations and says a primary-domain redirect can apply across market subfolders unless you create market-specific rules. Verify the result for each important country and language. Keep a spreadsheet of source, target and test status so the migration can be reviewed after launch.
Why does a redirect appear to do nothing?
The source often still resolves as a valid page. Check the old path without relying on a theme preview. Shopify's documentation says making a previously hidden product or collection visible again can delete an associated redirect because the URL is no longer broken. A wrong path spelling or a reserved prefix is another possibility. Confirm the source, its HTTP result and the target in sequence.
A 404 page can still help visitors when no relevant replacement exists. Do not invent a misleading destination just to eliminate every 404. If the migration changes an established product URL, check our theme-change SEO guide for broader preservation steps. A theme switch alone does not require changing all product handles.
What is the theme's role?
A Shoptimity theme can display a useful 404 page and clear navigation. Shopify's redirect system handles the old-to-new path. Theme versus app responsibilities explains why a visual template cannot make a live old URL redirect. We checked Shopify's public redirect rules, not your search-console logs or migration plan. Audit your highest-value links first.
