Shopify Discount Usage Limits: Per Customer, Order and Campaign

Shopify discount usage limits help define who can use a promotion and how often. A campaign-wide cap, a per-customer limit and a per-order application limit solve different problems. Write the offer in plain language and test boundary cases before advertising it.

Distinguish the limits

Shopify's amount-off discount guide describes limits and minimum requirements for supported discounts. Available options vary by discount type.

A total limit does not automatically mean one use per person. Conversely, a per-customer limit does not cap the total number of participating customers. Check the specific discount type and interface before promising a particular restriction.

Set a meaningful threshold

For amount-off discounts, Shopify says the minimum purchase amount counts product prices and excludes shipping and taxes. Where eligibility is restricted to certain products or purchase types, check which items contribute to the threshold under that discount's rules. Free-shipping and Buy X get Y discounts can have different conditions.

For example, if an offer requires 100 in qualifying product value, a cart with 90 in eligible products plus 10 shipping should not be assumed to qualify. Test the actual discount and market currency. Make the offer's eligibility and exclusions visible before shoppers reach checkout.

Prevent ambiguous campaign promises

Decide whether the code applies to subscriptions, one-time products or both where that setting exists. Review eligible collections, dates, combinations with other discounts and the maximum usage. A fixed product discount may apply to every eligible item unless the supported once-per-order option is selected.

Shopify's discount FAQ notes that a submitted order can hold a code against its usage limit while payment is pending. A failed payment normally releases the hold, but a checkout that never finishes may leave it held if the provider does not report failure correctly. Check the order and payment timeline before telling a customer they have already redeemed an offer.

Test a compact matrix

  1. Use a test customer and eligible product below the threshold.
  2. Test exactly at and above the threshold, excluding shipping and taxes.
  3. Add multiple eligible quantities to check per-order application.
  4. Test a second use by the same customer where a limit is configured.
  5. Test a customer who is not eligible and an excluded product.
  6. Check combinations, active dates, market and supported purchase types.
  7. Record the expected result and confirm the storefront message matches.

Limit tests may consume real uses or create real orders depending on the setup. Coordinate with the campaign owner, use a safe environment where possible and restore settings after testing. See discount combinations and checkout coupon fields.

Does a campaign-wide usage cap restrict each person to one use?
No. A total cap limits uses across the store; a separate per-customer limit may also be needed.
Do shipping and tax count toward an amount-off minimum?
Shopify says the amount-off minimum counts product prices and excludes shipping and taxes. Check the rules for other discount types separately.
Why can a code appear used after an incomplete order?
A submitted order can temporarily hold the code against its limit while payment is resolved. Investigate the payment timeline.
Does a discount automatically apply only once per order?
Not always. Shopify documents a once-per-order option for supported fixed product discounts; otherwise eligible quantities can be discounted.
