Shopify Capital: What a 1.15 Factor Rate Really Costs

Shopify Capital: Factor Rates and Real Cost cover art

Shopify Capital offers $200 to $2 million against future sales, priced as a factor rate of roughly 1.10 to 1.17 rather than as interest. A 1.15 factor on a $50,000 advance means $57,500 repaid, a real 15% cost, and an effective annual rate that depends entirely on how fast your own sales pay it back.

That last sentence is the whole decision. Fast repayment makes the same headline rate expensive in annual terms.

What the product actually is

According to Shopify's Capital page, offers appear inside the admin under Finances, and you cannot apply for one. Shopify underwrites from your store's performance, sales consistency, refunds, chargebacks, time on the platform, with no personal credit check and no collateral.

  • Amount: $200 to $2 million, with most offers between $5,000 and $200,000.
  • Structure: legally a loan in the US, Canada, Australia, France and Germany; a merchant cash advance in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain.
  • Repayment: a percentage of daily sales, commonly 10% to 20%, deducted automatically. Zero-sales days cost nothing.
  • Term: up to 18 months on loans.
  • Funding speed: 2 to 5 business days after acceptance.
  • Renewal: typically available once 65% is repaid.

The two fee structures

We ran both structures on a $100,000 advance to find where they cross.

Shopify offers a fixed fee or a monthly fee on some products, and the choice is arithmetic rather than preference.

StructureExample on $100,000Best when
Fixed fee at 13%$13,000 total, whatever the termRepayment will take longer than about 9 months
Monthly fee at $1,400$12,600 over 9 months, $16,800 over 12Repayment is fast
Fixed fee at 13%

Monthly fee at $1,400

The break-even sits where monthly fee × months equals the fixed fee. Below it, take the monthly structure; above it, take the fixed.

What a factor rate hides

A factor rate is honest about total dollars and silent about time. The $50,000 advance at 1.15 costs $7,500 whether it takes six months or eighteen. Repaid in six months, that is an annualised cost near 30%; repaid in eighteen, near 10%.

Compare that with a rate-capped SBA 7(a) loan, where the US prime rate of 7.00% in September 2026 caps the variable rate at roughly base plus 3.0% to 6.5% depending on loan size. On an annualised basis a bank loan wins comfortably. It also takes weeks and paperwork you may not have.

Our verdict: Shopify Capital buys speed and access, not cheap money. Use it for inventory you can turn before the advance is fully repaid, and avoid it for anything that does not produce sales, because repayment is charged against sales you already have.

Three limitations to plan around

It is tied to Shopify Payments. If you process elsewhere, or in a country where Shopify Payments is unavailable, Capital is not available to you at all.

Daily remittance competes with cash. A 15% remittance rate on $100,000 a month of sales is $15,000 a month leaving the account before subscription, apps, postage or payroll.

Renewal is not a strategy. Taking a second advance to cover the cash-flow gap created by the first is how a 15% cost becomes a permanent 15% drag. Model the repayment window before you accept, not after.

Capital Flex, the revolving version, is US-only and requires around $50,000 in trailing twelve-month GMV on the reported terms, so most stores meet the standard advance first.

If the cash need comes from margin rather than timing, Shopify transaction fees explained and the hidden cost of Shopify apps are worth reading before adding finance cost on top of platform cost. The programme itself is described at shopify.com.

Can I apply for Shopify Capital?
No. Shopify extends offers to eligible stores and they appear in the admin under Finances. There is no application, no credit check and no collateral requirement.
How much does Shopify Capital cost?
Typically 10% to 17% of the amount advanced, quoted as a factor rate of 1.10 to 1.17. A $10,000 advance at 1.15 repays $11,500 in total.
What is a good use for Shopify Capital?
Inventory or ad spend that converts into sales before the advance is repaid. Because repayment is a share of daily sales, spending it on anything that does not generate revenue compresses the cash you need to repay it.
Is Shopify Capital a loan or a cash advance?
Depends on the country. It is a loan in the US, Canada, Australia, France and Germany, and a merchant cash advance in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain.
