Shopify Flow HTTP Requests: Design for Retries and Safe Secrets

Shopify Flow HTTP Requests: Design for Retries and Safe Secrets cover art

The Shopify Flow Send HTTP request action can hand information to another service, but a timeout or retry can result in the receiving system seeing the same request more than once. Design the endpoint, error handling and secret management before connecting a live workflow. A successful HTTP response alone is not proof that a downstream business process completed.

Understand the response and retry behavior

Shopify's Send HTTP request guide says Flow waits up to 30 seconds for a response. If none arrives, it closes the connection and later retries. For configured client and server errors, the action can retry for up to 24 hours, fail the run or ignore the error and continue. Shopify groups 429 with server-error handling for this action.

An endpoint could complete an operation just before its response is lost. A repeated POST must not create a second shipment, credit or customer message. Coordinate with the receiving-service developer on a stable idempotency key and durable deduplication; merely assuming a request is unique is not enough.

Limit data and protect credentials

Shopify documents Flow secrets under Flow > Settings. Secrets can be referenced in supported URL, header or body fields; their values are hidden in the interface and redacted from run logs. Use a dedicated, least-privilege credential and plan rotation with the service owner. Avoid putting tokens in URLs, screenshots, chat messages or test datasets, even when a platform offers redaction.

Send only the fields needed for the task. Agree on the recipient, retention period and security requirements before transferring customer data to a third party. Use an approved test endpoint with synthetic records. Confirm that the receiving system protects logs as well as requests; Flow's own redaction cannot control every downstream copy.

Configure and test failures

Choose the method, destination, headers and body with the integration owner. Decide explicitly what retry, fail or ignore should mean for each error category. Ignoring an error can let later actions continue even though the external operation failed, so it needs an approved business reason and monitoring.

Keep the test reversible. Do not issue real refunds, ship orders or send customer messages just to exercise a workflow. Compare Flow run details with the receiving service's records, using a correlation identifier that does not expose personal data.

Monitor after release

Assign an owner for run failures, credential expiry and incident escalation. Shopify's Flow troubleshooting guide describes run errors and retries. Review a sample after activation and establish what happens if the external service is unavailable for longer than the retry window. A manual replay should use the same deduplication safeguards as an automatic retry.

Can a timed-out request have already changed the receiving system?
Yes. The service might process the request even if Flow does not receive the response; design for duplicate delivery.
Are Flow secrets shown in run logs?
Shopify says secret values are redacted from workflow run logs and are not visible in the Flow interface.
Does a 2XX response prove the entire downstream process succeeded?
Not necessarily. Verify the service's business result and monitoring separately.
