Shopify ABC Inventory Analysis: Use Revenue Grades Carefully

Shopify ABC inventory analysis groups product variants by their contribution to revenue. It can help a merchant decide where to investigate replenishment or merchandising, but the grade is not a margin calculation or a purchase order. Read the report's time window, cost treatment and inventory-value columns before acting.
Understand the grades
Shopify's inventory reports documentation says the ABC product analysis grades variants using their share of revenue over the last 28 days. The period cannot be adjusted and the report updates daily. Shopify describes A as the variants collectively contributing about 80% of revenue, B the next 15%, and C the last 5%.
| Grade | Report interpretation | Useful question |
|---|---|---|
| A | Largest cumulative revenue contribution | Is availability reliable? |
| B | Next revenue contribution | Is demand rising or falling? |
| C | Smallest cumulative contribution | Is stock justified by its role and cost? |
| Cost value | Stock quantity valued at recorded cost | Is the cost complete and current? |
| Price value | Stock valued at selling price | Does it reflect a realistic selling outcome? |
These are shares of revenue across variants, not a promise that 80% of products will be A grade. Shopify says the item's cost does not determine its grade. Its ABC analysis guide also says the revenue calculation is based on retail price and excludes discounts. High revenue does not necessarily mean high profit.
Read value columns separately
The report includes ending quantity and inventory values at cost and price. Shopify says a variant with a negative ending quantity is treated as having zero cost and price value in this ABC report. That treatment differs from simply multiplying a negative quantity by cost, so do not assume it matches the month-end inventory value report.
Investigate negative quantities as an inventory exception. They can signal timing, tracking or process issues, but the report alone does not establish the cause. Reconcile the SKU and location with inventory history and approved count records before adjusting stock.
Turn grades into questions, not automatic decisions
For A-grade items, check lead time, stock availability, supplier reliability and substitution options. For B-grade items, look for changes in customer demand and campaign timing. For C-grade items, consider storage cost and expected demand, but also consider whether the product is a strategically important accessory, seasonal item or newly launched variant with little history.
| Before acting | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Compare the last 28 days with seasonality | A short window can miss annual patterns |
| Review stock by location | Total inventory can hide a local shortage |
| Examine discounts and margin | Revenue grade excludes item cost and the stated calculation excludes discounts |
| Check supplier lead time | A high grade does not establish when to reorder |
| Review new or essential products | Low recent sales do not prove a product has no strategic value |
| Validate unit cost | A missing or incorrect cost can distort value comparisons |
Use a worked sample: if a high-revenue variant has a low contribution margin, an A grade should trigger a margin investigation rather than an automatic increase in spend. Finance should agree on the cost and profit measures used for any purchase decision.
Build a review rhythm
Save the report date and definition with the decision. Assign owners to investigate exceptions and verify actions with purchasing and finance. Check the store's current plan and report availability, which can change. Re-run the review after a major promotion or assortment change, but do not compare grades from different dates as though the same 28-day population was measured.
