Klaviyo vs Shopify Messaging: Which Email Bill Fits Your List

Shopify Messaging, the tool formerly called Shopify Email, gives every eligible store 10,000 free emails a month and charges per send after that. Klaviyo starts paid at $20 a month for 500 profiles and climbs with your list. Below roughly 2,000 subscribers, Shopify's tool is cheaper. Above that, the decision stops being about price.
What each tool charges
The billing models differ in a way that makes naive comparison wrong. Shopify charges for emails sent. Klaviyo charges for profiles stored.
| List size | Shopify Messaging, four campaigns | Klaviyo email plan |
|---|---|---|
| 500 | $0 | $20 a month |
| 1,000 | $0 | $30 a month |
| 5,000 | $10 a month | $100 a month |
| 10,000 | $30 a month | $150 a month |
| 25,000 | $90 a month | $400 a month |
Shopify's overage rate is $1 per 1,000 emails up to 300,000, then $0.65, then $0.55, per the Shopify Messaging docs. Abandoned checkout emails are always free. Klaviyo's free tier covers 250 active profiles and 500 sends a month, which is enough to test and not enough to run a store on.
The number Shopify's free allowance hides
A store with 10,000 subscribers sending four campaigns a month sends 40,000 emails. Shopify's bill is $30. Klaviyo's bill at that profile count is $150.
That comparison is real, and it is incomplete. Campaigns are the cheapest part of email. The money sits in flows: welcome series, browse abandonment, winback, post-purchase, replenishment. Shopify Messaging can run a basic abandoned checkout flow and not much else. Klaviyo's flow builder is the product you are paying for.
In our experience, stores on Shopify Messaging hit the same wall at roughly the same size. They have a list, they send campaigns, and they cannot build the three flows that would earn back the subscription. That is the moment to move.
When Shopify Messaging is the right answer
Stay on Shopify Messaging if you send fewer than four campaigns a month, run one abandoned checkout flow, and have under about 2,000 active subscribers. You are saving real money and losing nothing you would use.
The tool also wins on administration. It bills to your Shopify invoice, uses your existing product catalog, and needs no second vendor relationship. For a store doing under $20,000 a month, that simplicity has a cost of its own.
One caveat: eligibility. Some plans and regions have different allowances, and the free email quota is tied to your plan tier. Check the current terms in your admin rather than relying on a blog post, including ours.
When Klaviyo earns the $150
Klaviyo earns its price when flows produce revenue you can measure. Segmented welcome series, browse abandonment with dynamic product blocks, post-purchase sequences that drive repeat rate, and winback campaigns built from predictive customer lifetime value all need a real automation engine.
According to Klaviyo's published pricing, segmentation and predictive analytics sit inside the email plan rather than behind a separate tier, which is why the price jumps look steep against a per-send tool.
The migration itself is the part stores underestimate. Flows have to be rebuilt, not exported. Expect two weeks of setup plus a month of watching deliverability. Read how customer segments control who you can email before you move, because segmentation rules differ between the two systems and consent status does not always survive the import cleanly.
Deliverability is the same problem in both tools
Neither tool saves you from a weak sending reputation. Authenticate your domain with SPF, DKIM and DMARC before you send volume through any provider, or your campaigns land in promotions and your flows land nowhere.
Our email domain authentication guide walks through the records. Do this first, then compare tools. A cheaper tool sending to spam is the most expensive option on the list.
A migration path that does not lose revenue
Run both tools for one month. Keep campaigns on Shopify Messaging while you build flows in Klaviyo, then switch campaigns after the flows have run cleanly for two weeks. Suppress overlap so no subscriber gets the same email twice.
Export your segments before the switch and rebuild them by hand in the new tool. Do the same for suppression lists: unsubscribes, hard bounces and complaints. Losing that data is the fastest way to burn a sending reputation you spent a year building.
