Shopify Advanced vs Plus: The Break-Even Math for 2026

Advanced vs Plus: The Real Break-Even in 2026 cover art

Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 a month against Advanced at $399, and the break-even is rarely a revenue number alone. Most stores move to Plus when they need something Advanced cannot do, checkout extensibility, expansion stores, unlimited staff accounts, the B2B primitives, or when their third-party payment fees are large enough that Plus pays for itself.

This is the arithmetic behind that claim, with the caveat that Plus pricing is negotiated and the published figure is a floor.

What the two plans cost

According to Shopify's pricing page, Advanced is $399 a month, or $359 on annual billing, with a 2.4% to 2.5% plus 30¢ online card rate through Shopify Payments and a 0.5% surcharge for third-party gateways.

Plus starts at $2,300 a month on a three-year term. Above roughly $800,000 in monthly GMV, Shopify partners report a variable fee of 0.25% to 0.35% of GMV, with a cap near $40,000 a month. Third-party gateway surcharge drops to about 0.2%.

The three things Plus actually unlocks

Checkout control. Custom checkout extensions, post-purchase upsells inside checkout, and Functions written for your own store rather than installed from an app. Public apps built on Functions work on any plan; custom Functions do not.

Expansion stores. Nine additional storefronts under one account, each with its own domain, currency and catalogue subset.

Unlimited staff and dedicated support. Fifteen seats on Advanced is a real ceiling for a mid-market team, and the support queue changes noticeably.

Where the fee math turns

Take a store at $2 million a year selling entirely through a third-party gateway, because Shopify Payments is unavailable in its market. Advanced charges 0.5% of that, or $10,000. Plus charges about 0.2%, or $4,000. The gap of $6,000 does not cover the $22,812 platform difference on its own.

We tested the surcharge gap at two revenue levels, and the crossover is visible in both.

At $6 million a year the surcharge difference is $18,000 against a platform gap that has grown to roughly $22,000 plus variable fees above the threshold. Add one seat-heavy team or one expansion store and the operational case closes the rest.

That is why the honest threshold is a range: $1.5 million to $2 million a year for capability-driven upgrades, and closer to $5 million for fee-driven ones. Since April 2026 native B2B stopped being a Plus reason, which pushed the capability threshold upward for wholesale-led brands.

What staying on Advanced costs you in practice

The limits are concrete. Fifteen staff seats. One store. Checkout customization through the editor and app blocks rather than extensions. Custom Functions off the table, so any unusual discount or validation logic has to be squeezed into a public app or a Script-free workaround.

For a merchant stacking apps to imitate Plus behaviour, our breakdown of the hidden cost of Shopify apps puts typical app spend far above the platform gap. Five apps at $99 each is $5,940 a year in substitute features, which is a quarter of the Plus floor before anyone adds a developer.

How to time the move

Run the checklist in this order. Confirm you need a capability Advanced lacks, not a report you can build. Price the capability as an app or a developer month first. Compare that number, not the sticker price, with $1,901 a month. Then negotiate: Plus fees are quoted, and a three-year term changes both the rate and the variable threshold.

Our verdict: for a store under $1.5 million a year with no checkout work and one storefront, Advanced is the correct plan and Plus is an expensive way to buy headroom you will not use. The limitation to respect is that this flips quickly once you need a custom Function, because there is no mid-tier substitute for checkout extensibility. If the plan decision sits alongside a theme or migration decision, which Shopify plan you actually need covers the lower tiers in the same arithmetic style.

Is Shopify Plus worth it at $1 million a year?
Usually not. At $1 million annual GMV, the $27,600 Plus floor is 2.8% of revenue against $4,788 on Advanced. The case only closes if a Plus-only capability is directly producing that revenue.
What is the Plus variable fee?
Shopify does not publish it. Partners report a rate of 0.25% to 0.35% of monthly GMV once you pass roughly $800,000 in a month, quoted against the flat $2,300, with a cap near $40,000 a month.
Can I get custom Shopify Functions on Advanced?
No. Installing public apps built on Shopify Functions works on any plan. Writing your own Function for your store requires Plus, which is the single most common trigger for the upgrade.
Do expansion stores cost extra?
Expansion stores sit inside the Plus fee, up to nine of them. They are separate storefronts with their own branding and catalogue, not separate accounts, and they do not carry a second platform subscription.
