Shopify Checkout and Accounts Editor: Set Page Blocks

Shopify Checkout and Accounts Editor: Set Page Blocks cover art

The Shopify checkout and accounts editor lets merchants customize branding, post-purchase app blocks and customer account layouts in one workspace completely separate from the online store theme editor. Because Thank you, Order status and checkout step placements follow strict plan gates and block-inheritance rules, adding widgets casually can duplicate banners on every step or break market overrides. Check page roles, Basic versus Plus limits and draft configurations before publishing edits.

Understand each page inside the unified editor

Open Settings > Checkout > Configurations and click Edit on either your active checkout profile or a draft configuration. As outlined in Shopify's checkout and accounts editor guide, the top page selector switches between six distinct surfaces (Checkout, Thank you, Order status, Orders, Profile and Sign-in) while the left rail separates functional Sections, visual Settings and installed Apps.

Know the exact behavioral difference between the two post-purchase pages before placing survey or tracking blocks:

  • Thank you page: Displays only one time immediately after a shopper completes checkout, making it the right home for post-purchase attribution surveys or first-impression onboarding prompts.
  • Order status page: Displays live fulfillment and tracking updates whenever a buyer clicks back from confirmation emails or account history, so customers visit it multiple times per order.

With legacy Additional scripts and script-tag customizations retired in favor of Checkout Extensibility, analytics tags belong in Settings > Customer events pixels while visual widgets belong inside editor app blocks.

Check plan gates and repeated-block placement rules

Shopify's customizing checkout configurations overview and Checkout Blocks troubleshooting guide draw sharp boundaries between Basic-and-up stores and Shopify Plus organizations:

Watch out for two placement traps when configuring blocks:

  1. Order summary blocks repeat everywhere: Dropping an announcement or trust badge into the Order summary sidebar or beside the Continue button renders that block across every step of multi-section flows; place step-specific notes inside that step's main content area instead.
  2. Non-required custom field types: When Plus teams add custom checkout fields linked to order metafields, Checkbox, Delivery instructions and Gift message fields cannot be set as required, so never rely on those three field types for mandatory legal or age-gate compliance.

Test draft configurations and market overrides

Never edit your live checkout profile blind during peak traffic. Duplicate or open a draft checkout configuration, switch the top preview bar to mobile view and verify Shop Pay preview appearance alongside guest checkout. If your store customizes checkout copy by region, use the Markets selector inside the editor to verify that market-specific blocks or custom field labels appear only for intended countries before publishing the configuration live.

Can stores on the Basic Shopify plan add app blocks to Thank you and Order status pages?
Yes. Businesses on the Basic plan or higher can add eligible app blocks, dynamic content and static blocks to Thank you and Order status pages inside the checkout and accounts editor.
Why is an app block showing up on every checkout step instead of one section?
Blocks placed inside the Order summary area or attached to the Continue button persist across all checkout steps; move the block into a specific step's main content area to limit it.
Which custom checkout field types cannot be marked required?
In the checkout and accounts editor, Checkbox, Delivery instructions and Gift message custom fields cannot be configured as required fields.
