Shopify Collabs: Affiliate Programs, Costs and Controls

Shopify Collabs helps merchants work with creators using affiliate links, discount codes and commissions. A strong program needs more than a link: clear commission terms, creator selection, disclosure guidance and reconciliation for refunds. Shopify's indexed guidance has stated that open new creator signups are paused, while its current creator setup guide describes brand applications and direct invitations. Because those sources differ, verify the available signup path before recruiting.

Shopify's program guidance says creators in an open-access program can share affiliate links without manual approval. It lists creator-location eligibility for that program. Check the current account and program requirements, especially where creator-signup availability is unclear.

Set the commission using contribution margin

Suppose an eligible order is $80, product and fulfilment cost $35, and payment and other variable charges are $5. At a hypothetical 10% commission on $80, the commission is $8 and the remaining contribution is $32 before returns, overhead and other acquisition costs. This is an example, not a claim about Collabs' payout calculation or your contract.

Before finalizing terms, decide whether commission is calculated on gross or net order value, and how discounts, shipping, tax, partial returns and cancellations affect it. Confirm how tracking, attribution windows and code use are treated in the app and your agreement.

Agree on the work and disclosures

Give creators a concise brief covering approved claims, product limitations, permitted imagery, deadlines, usage rights and the process for correcting errors. A commission arrangement or free gift can be a material relationship requiring disclosure under applicable advertising rules. Ask qualified counsel and follow the relevant platform and jurisdiction rules rather than relying on a hashtag template.

Vet audience fit and content quality, not just follower counts. Start with a small group, confirm delivery and disclosures, and measure referred orders, returns, contribution and support workload. A high number of attributed clicks is not proof that every sale was incremental.

Reconcile payments and refunds

Shopify's creator payment guide explains automatic payments and holding periods. It says a cancelled or fully refunded order during the merchant-selected holding period automatically removes the commission from the pending total. Check how partial refunds, disputes and changes after that period are handled in the current product and your agreement.

Export or record each creator's terms, link, code, payable amount and payment status. Assign an owner for disputes and communicate the expected payment date. If a program closes, tell partners what happens to active codes, links, content rights and unpaid commissions.

For the wider unit economics, see contribution margin per order and Shopify discount combinations.

Review performance without shortcuts

Compare creators on agreed deliverables, valid referred orders, returns, contribution and the effort required to manage the partnership. A creator with fewer attributed orders may still support brand awareness, but that value should be assessed separately rather than added to the same sales figure twice. Revisit terms before increasing commission or sending more free products.

Is Shopify Collabs accepting new creator signups?
Shopify's indexed guidance has described a pause on open creator signups, while its live setup guide describes direct invitations and brand applications. Verify current access in the app before planning recruitment.
What is the difference between open access and invite programs?
Open access lets eligible creators generate links without individual pre-approval. Invite programs let a merchant choose participants and set terms.
Are commissions paid on cancelled orders?
Shopify says a cancellation or full refund during the selected holding period removes the commission from the pending total. Check other cases separately.
Do creators need to disclose affiliate relationships?
Disclosure obligations depend on applicable law and platform rules. A financial or gifted relationship can require clear disclosure; seek appropriate advice.
